Cockroach Identification

What are Cockroaches?

German cockroaches and American cockroaches are two types of roaches living in our region. Cockroaches have an oval-shaped body, long antennae, six legs. Some species have developed wings, while others do not.

Most roaches, including German and American cockroaches, quickly move from place to place. German cockroaches are small roaches; they are light brown to tan with two horizontal dark stripes behind the head. American cockroaches are the largest home-invading roach in the United States. They are reddish-brown with faded yellow edges on the thorax and have a pale yellow marking located right behind the head.

Are Cockroaches Dangerous?

Dangerous due to the amount of food they contaminate, diseases they spread, and damage to belongings they cause, cockroaches are not a pest anyone wants in their home. As cockroaches move throughout a structure, they crawl over countertops, through drawers, and inside cabinets, contaminating surfaces and food with things that make people ill such as E. coli, salmonella, and gastroenteritis.

Cockroach infestations often cause a strong unpleasant odor in the structures they have invaded. Also, a cockroach’s feces and shed skins trigger cold-like symptoms and asthma attics in people, especially children.

Why Do I Have a Cockroach Problem?

Simply put, you have a cockroach problem because your property offers them food, shelter, or moisture. Like any living thing, cockroaches prefer areas that supply them with their basic needs. Things like open trash containers, leaky pipes, excessive moisture, crumbs, and spills, are all things cockroaches will use to their advantage. Once inside your home, cockroaches are difficult to control and eliminate. They hide in out-of-the-way areas and breed quickly.

Where Will I Find Cockroaches?

Heat and humidity attract our area’s most common cockroaches. Both German and American cockroaches live successfully inside of our homes and businesses. German cockroaches are mainly indoor pests, and American cockroaches regularly move indoors while searching for food or better living conditions.

Some of the most common areas you will find cockroaches living inside of any home or business include:

  • Basements
  • Kitchens
  • Bathrooms
  • Crawlspaces
  • Utility rooms
  • Laundry rooms
  • Attics
