Fly Identification

What are flies?

House flies, green bottle flies, fruit flies, and drain flies are all examples of flies living in our area of New York that become unwelcome visitors in our homes and businesses. Flies belong to the insect order Diptera, which means "two wings." Flies only have one pair of wings; other insects have two pairs. Compound eyes provide flies with excellent vision and why they are so difficult to catch or swat.

Most flies are scavengers and help to spreed the process of breaking down decaying matter, which is helpful when living outside and away from people and our structures. When flies live near us, they are annoying and dangerous pests.

Are flies dangerous?

Not allowing fly populations to flourish on your property is crucial because flies are dangerous pests. Flies spread diseases that make people ill, contaminating food and surfaces with bacteria, pathogens, and parasites they pick up as they land and feed on decaying organic matter.

Why do I have a fly problem?

A problem with flies can seem to pop-up out of nowhere. One minute there are no flies around; the next minute, there are swarms of flies. Flies have a short lifespan but are prolific breeders, and populations can build very quickly. Flies are highly attracted to decaying foods and other organic matter that they feed or lay eggs on.

Some things found in most of our outdoor spaces that may attract flies include:

  • Trash receptacles
  • Recycling bins
  • Compost containers
  • Outdoor eating areas
  • Pet waste
  • Garden areas

Where will I find flies?

Flies thrive in the same habitats people do, which means flies can become a problem in any New York home or business. Many things allow flies to flourish in an area, including garbage, decaying vegetation, excrement, fruits and vegetables, carrion, and fermenting liquids.

Flies mainly live outside. However, if they find their way inside a building and food and breeding sites are available, they can also complete their life cycle indoors. They can become a problem in homes, restaurants, grocery stores, health facilities, warehouses, and more.
